Finding skilled care for someone you love can be difficult and emotionally charged. You want the finest medical care, of course, but you also want a supportive, warm, home-like environment. You want staff members who offer gentle compassion, respect for your loved one’s dignity—and an attentive ear for your needs as well.

Resources and strategies are available to help you make this important decision. As an informed consumer, you’ll be better prepared to choose the right home.

TALK TO FAMILIES AND RESIDENTS
One of the best ways to learn about a skilled nursing facility is to speak with the residents who live there and their families. Gauge their satisfaction with the quality of care, dining services, activities programs, and other key considerations. Perhaps the most telling question you’ll want to ask them is whether they would recommend the home.

At BaneCare…
We encourage you to speak with our residents and their families. You’ll discover that they are more than satisfied and appreciate our commitment to the finest care.

In fact, we regularly poll our families and residents to generate critical feedback and help identify ways to improve our programs. Here are some highlights from a recent resident and family satisfaction survey:
  • 100% of those surveyed reported that they would recommend Abbott House to others.
  • One respondent described Devereux House as "a paradigm of nursing home care."
  • A respondent said that The Swampscott Wing was "lovely" and commented about the "constant loving care."

EXPLORE OVERSIGHT AGENCY ASSESSMENTS
The state Department of Public Health (DPH), in conjunction with the federal Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), sends a survey team each year to evaluate every licensed nursing facility in Massachusetts that is Medicare- and Medicaid-certified. Inspectors carefully examine the ways homes comply with hundreds of regulations and codes during the exhaustive annual surveys. The state makes its survey results public and families can use the information to assess and compare nursing facilities.

At BaneCare…
We consistently score in the top tenth percentile among state extended care centers and often receive deficiency-free inspections. In fact, in 2004,
Abbott House, Devereux House, and Rosewood all scored perfectly. These exemplary surveys mean that BaneCare exceeded the standards for exceptional quality care.

The Joint Commission for Accreditation on Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) is the nationally recognized agency that accredits medical organizations. Extended care facilities voluntarily participate in JCAHO accreditation programs. Only homes that meet its rigorous standards and pass its comprehensive inspections can display the JCAHO logo.

At BaneCare…
We are proud to have been recognized by the Joint Commission for "Accreditation with Commendation."

VISIT AND ASK QUESTIONS
It is essential that you personally visit the home you are considering for your loved one. Carefully observe the facility, the interactions between residents and staff members, the activities, and other features. Be sure to consider many important questions, including:

  • Is the atmosphere homelike and congenial?
  • Do the residents appear well cared for?
  • Does the facility look and smell clean?
  • Do meals look appetizing and nutritious?
  • What social activities are offered?
  • Will the rehabilitation programs meet your needs?

At BaneCare…
We welcome your questions and invite you to take a tour. We want you to see first-hand the gold standard of care that we will provide for your loved one. We work hard to earn your trust and want BaneCare to be your first choice for nursing care.
